Temp mail vs email alias vs plus addressing

They solve the same problem differently. Pick by how long you need the address and whether you must ever be able to recover the account.

Plus addressing (you+shop@gmail.com)

Mail still lands in your real inbox. It is easy to filter, but anyone can strip the tag and the real address is still exposed. Best for tracking who leaked your address.

Forwarding alias

A separate address forwards to your real one and can be switched off. Good for accounts you keep, because you can still receive reset mail.

Temporary inbox

Nothing is forwarded and nothing is kept. Best for one-off tasks and testing, worst for anything you may need to recover.

Quick decision

  • Will I need this account in a year? Use an alias.
  • Do I just need the confirmation code? Use a temporary inbox.
  • Do I only want to see who sold my address? Use plus addressing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is most private?

A temporary inbox exposes the least, because your real address is never involved.

Which can I recover an account with?
